A Journey Through the Heart of Halkidiki: Seven Days of Sun, Sea & Scenic Trails

A walking holiday where pine-scented paths, ancient cities, and muddy boots met Mediterranean charm.

Arrival Day

Let’s just say our arrival didn’t go exactly to plan. But the sun shone—on what turned out to be our one and only day of uninterrupted sunshine—and spirits lifted with a complimentary drink.

Day 1: Into the Pines of Elia

We kicked off our adventure in Elia, where the air was thick with the scent of pine and olive trees. A gentle circular walk led us toward the charming chapel of Agios Pavlos, with the Aegean Sea glimmering in the distance like a postcard come to life. The plan was to round off the day with a leisurely lunch and a dip in crystalline waters—but the weather had other ideas. No one took the plunge, unless you count puddles.

Day 2: Coastal Bliss from Sani to Siviri (and the Cement Boot Challenge)

Today’s full-day walk was a coastal dream… until the mud joined the party. Starting at the luxurious Sani resort, we followed trails through pine woods hugging the western coast of Kassandra. Unfortunately, rain had transformed the paths into a sticky blend of mud, lime, and water—basically DIY cement. Boots gained weight, legs lost enthusiasm.

Still, the sea was our constant companion, and hidden beaches teased us with their beauty. We arrived in Siviri, where a laid-back vibe and a very welcome Italian meal restored our strength—and our sense of humour.

Day 3: Thessaloniki—Where History Meets the Sea

For those who opted in, today’s excursion to Thessaloniki was a cultural feast. Greece’s second-largest city dazzled with Byzantine walls, the sacred church of Agios Dimitrios, the Roman Agora, and the Galerius Arch. We even explored the remains of a once-grand palace—proof that emperors knew how to live.

After lunch, we visited the iconic White Tower before ending the day with a scenic boat ride and a free drink around the harbour. History, sea breezes, and a cheeky cocktail—what more could you ask for?

Day 4: Hidden Creeks & WWII Echoes in Toroni

The sun peeked out today, and we embraced it like long-lost friends. Back in Sithonia, we began our walk at the southern tip of Toroni beach. The coastal path revealed secluded creeks, aromatic greenery, and Gunnery Hill—a WWII fortification with panoramic views that stirred both awe and reflection.

We ended the walk back at Toroni’s sandy beach, where a taverna lunch in New Marmaris awaited. Sunshine, history, and souvlaki—finally, the Greek trifecta.

Day 5: Taxiarchis to Arnaia – Short Walk, Big Cakes

Today offered a short 7 km walk. We crossed dirt roads and forest paths, soaking in nature’s variety. The final 2 km into Arnaia was steep and tested a few knees, but the reward was sweet—literally.

Arnaia, nestled in the mountains, charmed us with its preserved 19th-century mansions, Macedonian architecture, and flower-filled streets. We found cafés, a restaurant, and settled into the slow mountain pace. Drinks flowed, and the cakes were enormous—possibly record-breaking.

Day 6: Leisure in Gerakini

Today was ours to enjoy at leisure. Some relaxed at the hotel, others wandered into the village of Gerakini, and a couple of taverns with cold drinks and warm hospitality. Whether exploring or simply soaking up the sun (finally!), it was a chance to reflect, recharge, and toast to a week well walked.

Day 7: Farewell, Halkidiki

After breakfast, we bid a fond farewell to this enchanting region and transferred to Thessaloniki Airport for our flight home. The memories—of forest trails, ancient ruins, and sunlit swims—will linger long after the unpacking is done.

This walking holiday wasn’t just a trip. It was a celebration of nature, history, and the joy of moving through beautiful landscapes—even when the weather had other plans.
