My South African Adventure: A 19-Day Journey Across a World in One Country
While winter settled in back home in the UK, I had the wonderful opportunity to escort a Regent group tour to South Africa—often described as “a world in one country.” With landscapes that are five times the size of the UK and infinitely more varied, this extraordinary destination offers something new at every turn.
For anyone wanting to explore the full breadth of South Africa, I always recommend a coach tour. It’s the most relaxing and enjoyable way to travel long distances while letting a skilled driver and knowledgeable local guide handle the logistics. All you need to do is sit back, take in the views, and enjoy the journey.
Mpumalanga & Kruger National Park
Our adventure began in beautiful Mpumalanga, a region shaped by rolling hills, vast canyons, and striking panoramas. From there, we continued to the iconic Kruger National Park—undoubtedly one of the highlights of the tour. Seeing the “Big Five” up close, alongside countless other species, was truly unforgettable and a reminder of the incredible biodiversity South Africa is known for.
Swaziland & The Battlefields
We then crossed into the mountain kingdom of Swaziland (Eswatini), a small but culturally rich nation surrounded by dramatic scenery. Our journey continued to the historic Battlefields, where we learned about the Zulu and Boer wars. Standing on these significant sites brought South Africa’s complex history vividly to life.
The Drakensberg Mountains
Next came a welcome change of pace as we travelled into the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains. Our stay at Cathedral Peak offered both comfort and jaw-dropping views. As someone who loves walking, I was in my element—the trails here are breathtaking and perfect for anyone who enjoys exploring on foot. Excellent food and serene surroundings made this portion of the trip especially memorable.
The Garden Route
We then flew to Port Elizabeth to begin the famous Garden Route. This coastal stretch is dotted with pristine beaches, stylish holiday towns, and restaurants serving fresh, beautifully prepared South African cuisine—often at remarkably good value. And of course, the local wines are a delight!
Cape Town & The Cape Peninsula
Our final destination was Cape Town—an iconic city that deserves every bit of its global reputation. Taking the cableway up Table Mountain is a must, offering panoramic views that are simply breathtaking. The Cape Point tour was another standout moment, showcasing dramatic cliffs, sweeping ocean views, and the untamed beauty of the peninsula.
A Truly Exceptional Holiday
From the Southern Drakensberg Mountains and Blyde River Canyon to Cape Point and the Atlantic Seaboard, this 19-day tour captured the very best of South Africa. We experienced extraordinary wildlife in Kruger, explored captivating history in the Zulu Battlefields, and travelled through some of the most diverse landscapes imaginable.
It was a journey filled with discovery, adventure, and unforgettable moments—an incredible holiday from start to finish.
