Autumn Colours of Kent
On a bright and sunny morning, a full coach of Regent travellers departed Staffordshire, eager for our autumn adventure. After a pleasant lunch stop in Aylesbury, we continued our journey to our hotel in the heart of Kent.
The next day, blessed once again with sunshine, we made the short trip to the Historic Dockyard in Chatham. The fascinating Ropery Tour proved to be a highlight, and several of our group bravely explored the submarine—requiring a touch of agility to climb through its narrow hatches! The Lifeboat Exhibition also captivated many of us. From there, we took a short hop to the charming town of Rochester, where we enjoyed browsing its quirky independent shops and relaxing in cosy cafés.
Sunday began with a guided walking tour of Canterbury. Bathed in yet more beautiful sunshine, the city looked picture-perfect as we wandered its historic streets, learning about its rich past before ending our tour within the peaceful cathedral precincts. Later, we travelled to the medieval town of Faversham, where the pretty Tudor-framed houses and elegant town hall were a delight to see.
Even with the clocks turned back, we continued to make the most of the crisp autumn days. At Ightham Mote, we strolled through the grounds and explored the house—our visit made extra special by the sudden roar of engines overhead as two Spitfires soared past from nearby Biggin Hill Airfield.
Chartwell, the beloved home of Sir Winston Churchill, was another highlight. The house offered a fascinating glimpse into his life, featuring many personal artefacts from his years as Prime Minister during World War II. We also visited his studio in the gardens, where sweeping views over the Weald of Kent glowed with vibrant autumn colours.
Our final stop was Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire. This striking Jacobean house, set amidst expansive parklands, hosted an intriguing exhibition showcasing Lord Fairhaven’s wardrobe—from his riding attire to his formal suits. A leisurely wander through the gardens was the perfect way to unwind and soak up the last rays of autumn sunshine before our journey home.
A truly memorable tour filled with history, charm, and the very best of Kent’s autumnal beauty.
