Magical Malta: A Week of History, Sunshine, and Candlelight

In October, I spent a wonderful week exploring the fascinating island of Malta. I flew from East Midlands Airport — my preferred choice in the Midlands thanks to its easy access and relaxed atmosphere compared with the busier Birmingham and Manchester airports. Staying overnight at the Leonardo Hotel, using Jet2’s convenient twilight check-in, and relaxing in the airport lounge made the early-morning flight stress-free and surprisingly enjoyable.

Staying in Sliema

For my base, I chose the Waterfront Hotel in Sliema — a fantastic 4-star property perfectly located for catching the ferry across to Valletta and onwards to the Three Cities: Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea (Isla), and Cospicua (Bormla).

My room was bright, spacious, and spotless, with a large modern walk-in shower and a balcony for enjoying the warm sea air. Each morning began with a generous buffet breakfast offering plenty of variety and fresh local flavours — the perfect way to start the day.

The Magic of the Candlelight Festival

I was in luck: my visit coincided with the incredible annual Candlelight Festival in Birgu. On that evening, the entire town turned off its electric lights and was illuminated solely by thousands of flickering candles. The effect was truly magical — narrow streets glowing with warm light, soft music echoing through the air, and a sense of timeless wonder. We also visited nearby Fort St. Angelo that night, which was beautifully atmospheric in the candlelit glow.

Exploring Valletta and Beyond

Malta’s capital, Valletta, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an absolute treasure to explore. It’s a city that feels like stepping back through centuries of history, filled with stunning architecture and stories at every turn. I joined a guided walking tour led by an English-speaking guide, who brought Malta’s fascinating past vividly to life.

St. John’s Co-Cathedral was a true highlight — every inch of its interior is lavishly carved, gilded, and painted. Wandering through Valletta’s narrow, straight streets, I admired the unique architecture before visiting the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens, where the daily cannon salute still echoes across the harbour.

Historic Treasures and Hidden Depths

Another memorable day took me to the magnificent Mosta Cathedral, famous for surviving a World War II bomb that miraculously failed to explode. Its enormous dome is awe-inspiring, and beneath it lies an underground air raid shelter that tells powerful wartime stories.

From there, I travelled to Mdina — Malta’s “Silent City.” With its golden stone walls, narrow alleys, and old-world charm, Mdina feels like a film set (and indeed, it’s featured in Game of Thrones). I also explored the underground vaults and catacombs of St. Paul’s, a fascinating glimpse into the island’s early Christian history.

Final Thoughts

Malta captivated me with its blend of history, charm, and sunshine. October’s weather was beautifully mild and dry — perfect for exploring without the summer crowds. Between the Candlelight Festival, historic landmarks, and friendly local atmosphere, it was a week full of discovery and delight.

I left feeling that a week simply wasn’t long enough. There’s so much more to see on this beautiful Mediterranean island — and I can’t wait to return.
