Amalfi Unfiltered: Seven Days of Sun, Storms & Spontaneity
A walking holiday where nature reigned, pasta flowed, and waterproofs were tested to their limits.
Day 1: From Hilltops to Harbours – A Taste of Sorrento
Our adventure began with a scenic drive to the charming village of Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi, where the Monastery of Il Deserto offered sweeping views over the twin bays of Naples and Salerno. After soaking in the panorama (and taking enough photos to crash a cloud server), we laced up our walking shoes and followed ancient trails to the quiet hamlet of Casarlano.
Midway, we stopped at the delightful Farm La Sorgente for a rustic lunch. Nestled among terraced gardens of lemons, oranges, olives, and grapes, the farm gave us a glimpse into traditional agriculture. We watched fresh ricotta and mozzarella being made from the farm’s own cows and savoured them alongside local wine and zesty limoncello. It was farm-to-table with a side of sunshine.
Our walk continued to Sorrento, where guests did their own thing—some shopped, some sipped cappuccinos, and some simply soaked up the café culture. We then descended the many steps to the quaint fishing village of Marina Grande, where a private boat awaited. Cruising along the coast with the sea breeze in our hair was the perfect end to a perfect day.
Day 2: Into the Valle delle Ferriere – Nature’s Hidden Masterpiece
We began with the iconic Amalfi Drive, winding along cliffs that make your stomach flip and your camera work overtime. Upon reaching Amalfi, a landslide rerouted our plans, sending us to Pontone instead. From there, we hiked into the lush Valle delle Ferriere—a nature reserve bursting with waterfalls, mossy ruins, and ferns that looked like they’d been around since dinosaurs had dinner parties.
Just as we were basking in nature’s glory, the heavens opened. Ravello was abandoned, and we huddled in a restaurant that miraculously fit all 30 of us. Wine flowed, pasta comforted, and laughter echoed. The bus eventually arrived—leaky roof and all—delivering us back to the hotel.
Day 3: Peaks, Picnics & the Path to Punta Campanella (or: How We Climbed Into a Cloud and Got Ambushed by Cake)
Armed with picnic treats from Termini’s colourful shops, we climbed Monte San Costanzo. At the summit stood a tiny white chapel and, allegedly, breathtaking views of Naples and Salerno. Sadly, we were inside a cloud.
Our descent was meant to lead to Punta Campanella, but with fog thicker than a bowl of risotto, we wisely turned back. On the way down, we encountered a café owner who insisted we sample his nonna’s limoncello cakes. He also tried to sell us olive oil, mozzarella, and a leg of cured beef. The cakes won.
Day 4: Walking the Path of the Gods (and Dancing Like No One Was Watching)
We tackled the legendary Path of the Gods, starting in Bomerano. Ancient shepherd trails, limestone caves, and a spring-fed oasis made for a heavenly hike. We reached Nocelle, where cable cars haul supplies like flying grocery baskets, and paused in Montepertuso for lunch.
Then came the descent into Positano—a staircase so steep it should come with a medal. Once in town, most of us skipped the boutiques and beelined for the nearest bar. Beer and gin flowed, and Michael stole the show with a dance that was either the Tarantella, the Pizzica, or pure improvisation. Either way, it was unforgettable.
Day 5: Capri Cancelled, Sunshine Delivered – A Day of Detours and Delights
Capri was on the cards, but the weather said “no.” Instead, guests scattered like confetti. Brenda and Roger led a return hike to Termini for chapel views (this time with actual visibility). Some braved Naples, others wandered local paths and were gifted Scotch Bonnet chillies by a generous local. A few opted for cappuccinos and sunshine in Massa Lubrense—the first proper rays all week.
By afternoon, we reunited at Angelo’s harbour bar. Drinks, pizza, pasta, and sun-kissed smiles rounded off a day that proved spontaneity is the best tour guide.
Day 6: Arrivederci Amalfi – A Farewell with a Twist
One last breakfast overlooking the coast, and it was time to say goodbye.
Amalfi, you’ve soaked us, fed us, dazzled us, and danced with us. Until next time.
