Volcanic Vistas of the Azores & Madeira: A Journey with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
Sailing the Atlantic aboard Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines offers the perfect blend of natural drama, rich heritage, and unforgettable island charm. Our October voyage whisked us through the volcanic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, before concluding in mainland Portugal—each destination offering its own story carved by nature, culture, and time.
Praia da Vitória, Terceira, Azores
Our adventure began on the island of Terceira, where Praia da Vitória welcomed us with rolling green hills and unmistakable volcanic silhouettes on the horizon. The highlight was the Serra do Cume lookout, an otherworldly viewpoint stretching across patchwork fields, the city, and its crescent-shaped bay. Standing above the clouds and lush valley, you feel as if you’re looking down on a giant green quilt.
A short journey carried us to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo, once the capital of Portugal and still radiating elegance with its pastel houses and serene marina. In the heart of the town, the 15th-century Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião stood proudly—its Gothic architecture a reminder of Portugal’s deep maritime history.
Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores
Next, we explored the largest island in the Azores, São Miguel—an island sculpted by centuries of volcanic activity. No visit is complete without witnessing the captivating Sete Cidades, the twin crater lakes nestled in the caldera of an extinct volcano. The contrast of emerald and sapphire waters is something photographs simply can’t capture.
Here, volcanic power becomes part of daily life. We tasted the local delicacy “Cozido das Furnas”, a hearty stew slow-cooked underground using geothermal heat. Nowhere else in the world can a meal claim to be this close to the Earth’s fire.
Before departing, we visited Europe’s only tea plantation, the Gorreana Tea Estate, where the scent of fresh leaves mingled with ocean breeze—a tranquil finale to a remarkable island.
Funchal, Madeira – The Garden Island
Arriving in Madeira felt like stepping into an island-sized garden. Funchal is a tapestry of tropical blooms, dramatic cliffs, and warm hospitality. Our visit to the enchanting Monte Palace Tropical Gardens was a journey through exotic plants, koi-filled ponds, and serene Japanese-inspired pathways.
Adding a dash of adventure, we explored the island by motorcycle sidecar—a thrilling two-hour excursion weaving through coastal roads and terraced hillsides. From cliffside viewpoints to charming villages, it was a fresh and exhilarating way to see Madeira’s natural splendour.
Lisbon, Cascais & Sintra – Mainland Portugal’s Charm
Returning to mainland Portugal, Lisbon greeted us with its classic blend of tradition and contemporary vibrancy. We visited Eduardo VII Park, a grand green avenue stretching toward the city skyline, before admiring the elegant façade of Liberty One.
The coastal town of Cascais, known as the Portuguese Riviera, offered sunlit marinas, stylish promenades, and sparkling Atlantic views. From here, a tuk-tuk tour swept us into the fairytale world of Sintra, nestled in the mystical folds of forested mountains, its palaces rising like something from a storybook.
As the cruise journey drew to a close, we sailed out through the mouth of the River Tagus, watching Lisbon’s golden light shimmer across the water—a perfect farewell to a voyage rich in landscapes, legends, and volcanic wonders.
