My Journey through Medieval Germany with Riviera Travel
I recently had the most incredible experience travelling through Medieval Germany with Riviera Travel, spending seven nights on board the beautiful MS George Eliot. The ship quickly became my floating home – comfortable, welcoming, and the perfect base for exploring the treasures of Bavaria.
Our adventure began in Nuremberg, where the cobbled streets, medieval walls, and centuries-old buildings immediately transported me back in time. It’s a city that wears its history proudly, and everywhere I turned there was another story waiting to be discovered.
From there, we journeyed to Bamberg, a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage city nestled in the hills. The cathedral was magnificent, but it was the rose gardens that really captured me – with their colourful blooms and sweeping views, they felt like a hidden piece of paradise.
One of the highlights of the trip came when we stopped in Ochsenfurt and then travelled along the Romantic Road to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. I don’t think I’ve ever visited anywhere quite like Rothenburg. Surrounded by ancient walls, with its timber-framed houses and cobbled streets, it felt like I had stepped into a fairytale. I even visited the traditional Christmas shop, open all year round, which was magical. Learning that Walt Disney drew inspiration here for Pinocchio and that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was filmed in the town made it feel even more special.
We continued on to Würzburg, where the Residenz Palace quite literally took my breath away. The baroque architecture and the immaculate gardens were some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. Later, in Wertheim, I enjoyed a gentle morning tour before heading to Miltenberg, where I wandered through the largest German market I’ve ever come across. The stalls, the food, and the atmosphere made it such a vibrant and unforgettable experience. That evening we celebrated with the Captain’s Dinner on board – a perfect way to end such a memorable day.
Our final stop was Mainz, a city full of charm and history. What surprised me most was the little beach area along the river, where I spent a few quiet moments reflecting on the journey before heading back to the ship.
Looking back, this trip was everything I hoped it would be and more – from storybook towns and grand palaces to bustling markets and riverside strolls. Travelling with Riviera gave me the chance to see a side of Germany that felt both magical and timeless, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget.
