My Tuscan Escape
I’ve just returned from a wonderful week in Tuscany, staying in the heart of the Chianti region—an area of rolling, tree-covered hills crowned with medieval hilltop towns. Quiet country roads lined with cypress trees led us to charming, family-run wineries offering tastings and tours.
Perfectly located between Siena and Florence, we spent time exploring both. In Florence, we pre-booked tickets to the Uffizi Gallery to skip the queues and walk the historic Vasari Corridor above the Ponte Vecchio to the Pitti Palace—tracing the steps of the Medici family. Having visited Florence before, we also sought out hidden gems like the Michelangelo-designed staircase and the Laurentian Library in Piazza di San Lorenzo.
Siena, with its winding alleys, red sandstone buildings, and vibrant piazzas, was a joy to explore. Highlights included the spectacular Duomo with its 14th-century marble mosaic floor, and relaxing in Piazza del Campo over a glass of Aperol Spritz—perfect for people-watching.
Locally, we explored charming towns throughout Chianti, with Castellina in Chianti a clear favourite. Perched high on a hill, it offered sweeping views, lovely shops and restaurants, and two irresistible gelato spots. At Castello di Brolio, we enjoyed a leisurely afternoon exploring the grounds and historic buildings, capped off with a Chianti Classico tasting (for my husband—I was the designated driver!).
Our one-bedroom apartment featured a beautiful terrace and shared pool, making it an ideal base. With Jet2 flights from Birmingham to Pisa and car hire, the whole trip went off without a hitch.
A perfect week-long escape from reality!
